Understanding Your Individual Health Insurance Options

Understanding Your Individual Health Insurance Options

Individual health insurance is not one-size-fits-all. The right choice depends on your health, household income, preferred doctors, prescriptions, budget, and how long you expect to need coverage. At RLee Insurance Solutions, we compare the available options and explain both the benefits and limitations of each plan. Our goal is to help you understand what you are purchasing before you make a decision.

Affordable Care Act Marketplace Plans

Affordable Care Act plans provide comprehensive major medical coverage and cannot deny coverage or increase your premium because of your health or pre-existing conditions. All ACA plans cover essential health benefits, including hospitalization, emergency care, preventive services, prescription drugs, and maternity care.

Depending on your household income and eligibility, you may qualify for a premium tax credit that reduces your monthly premium. Some applicants may also qualify for additional savings that lower deductibles, copayments, and other out-of-pocket costs.

ACA plans are generally available during the annual Open Enrollment Period. You may also be able to enroll at another time if you experience a qualifying life event, such as losing employer coverage, getting married, having a child, or moving to a new coverage area.

Medically Underwritten Individual Plans

Medically underwritten plans may provide an alternative for healthy individuals and families who do not qualify for meaningful financial assistance through the ACA Marketplace. These plans may be available throughout the year, without waiting for Open Enrollment or experiencing a qualifying life event.

Because eligibility and premiums can be based on your health history, applicants may be declined or offered coverage with limitations. Benefits, provider networks, prescription coverage, exclusions, and maximum benefit amounts vary by plan.

These plans are not appropriate for everyone. We carefully review the coverage and limitations with you so you can determine whether the lower premium provides enough protection for your needs.

Short-Term Medical Insurance

Short-term medical insurance is designed primarily to provide temporary coverage during a transition. It may be useful when you are between jobs, waiting for employer benefits to begin, approaching Medicare eligibility, or need coverage for another limited period.

Short-term plans are medically underwritten and are not required to provide all the protections or benefits included in an ACA plan. Depending on the policy, coverage may exclude pre-existing conditions, provide limited prescription benefits, restrict the number of covered doctor visits, or place additional limits on covered services.

For healthy individuals who understand these limitations, short-term medical insurance may offer a more affordable way to obtain temporary protection. It should be evaluated carefully and should not automatically be treated as a replacement for comprehensive major medical coverage.

Choosing Coverage with Confidence

The lowest premium is not always the lowest-cost choice once deductibles, provider networks, prescriptions, exclusions, and potential medical expenses are considered. We help you compare:

There is no additional cost to work with our agents. We explain your options clearly, help with the application and enrollment process, and remain available after your coverage begins.
